I would indeed have stopped, had love stopped.

I did not reveal my love, but it revealed itself.

I did not complain until my longing overwhelmed my endurance,

And it said to me, 'Choose complaint or death.'

So give me life, if you wish, or kill me with certainty,

While acknowledging the act you commit.

Why should I not brave the sea of love, hoping

For a pearl clothed in a shell of grace?

Do not ask me; ask your eyelids about my condition,

For I am too weak to complain, just as they have grown weak.

And how can I tell you of my body and its thinness,

When you lend it the fragility of your own figure?

I see my love as majestic in its delicacy,

Like your body, whether grand or delicate.

    A body whose crafted forms have reached perfection;

So the descriptions of those who describe it differ.

Beauty was divided into parts in its composition,

So, though divided, it became united in beauty.

    Divided into portions, it grew supple, then drew near;

Rather, it grew slender, then lofty; rather, delicate, then pure.

When he glides along, you see the waves surging,

And if he sways, you see a branch bending.

A branch that, when it sways, sets hearts trembling for it,

Because it is so supple; without its suppleness, it would snap.

    فحين يمشي يحاكي اللام والألفا

    Suppleness bends him, and balance holds him upright;

So when he walks, he resembles the letters lām and alif.

What captured my heart, with words it punctuated,

Was a smile's lightning, flashing forth to snatch reason away.

Lightning from which I hoped for rain, for which I sowed

Within my breast a hope that has become my sorrow.

So water love's garden with the rain of wishes; perhaps

We may harvest the fruit of union, or rare delights.

Grant me union for a day, for on this hangs my last breath,

And grant me figures like the letter alif.

You possess beauty and reason; if you desire their

Preservation, guard against conceit and arrogance.

You have attained beauty; if you seek perfection, do not

Practice treachery in a pledge, or break your word.

Be kind, Abu Hasan, for the lover, when

He comes to the beloved, keeps his pledge to him.
