رحلتُI departed وماand not شوقيmy longing عنfrom الإلفthe beloved راحِلُdeparting
وزلتُand I moved away وماand not عهدthe pledge of الرعايةcare زائلُfading
I departed, but my longing has not left my beloved.
I traveled, yet my longing for intimacy did not depart
I moved away, but the pledge of care has not faded.
And I stumbled, yet the days of care did not end
يُمثِّلconjures ليfor me قلبيmy heart علىdespite البعدthe distance شخصَهhis form
فتمثالهso his image ليbefore me حيثُwhere ماever كنتُI was ماثلُpresent
My heart conjures his form for me despite the distance;
My heart depicts his image during separation
His image thus stands before me wherever I may be.
So his statue remains wherever I reside
رعىmay ... guard اللَهGod مَنthe one whose روحيmy soul قرينةcompanion to روحِهِhis soul
وماand not بينbetween جسمَيناour two bodies تُعَدُّare counted المَراحلُthe stages
May God guard him whose soul is paired with mine,
May God protect the one whose soul is intimate with mine
Though the stages between our bodies are beyond counting.
And between our bodies lie many miles
وقدand indeed فَصَلhas parted التفريقseparation بينbetween أحبَّةٍlovers
وليسand there is no لأرواحfor the souls الأحبَّةof lovers فاصلُdivider
And separation has indeed parted lovers,
Separation has divided lovers
Yet nothing divides the souls of lovers.
Yet souls of lovers have no division
سقىmay ... water اللَهُGod أياماًdays نعمناwe lived in bliss بظلِّهاin their shade
إذwhen العيشُlife غَضٌّfresh والحبيبand the beloved مُواصِلُmaintaining closeness
May God water the days in whose shade we lived in bliss,
May God water days when we enjoyed their shade
When life was fresh and the beloved kept close.
When life was full and the beloved stayed in touch
تغازلنيflirt with me منهfrom him الإشاراتthe gestures عابثاًplayfully
فيصطادنيso he captures me ذاكthat الغزالthe gazelle المُغازِلُthe flirtatious one
His gestures flirt with me as he teases,
He flirts with me sending signals playfully
Thus that flirtatious gazelle captures me.
So that gazelle keeps trapping me, the flirt
فحيثso wherever رمىhe shot منّيon me يصادفhe strikes مقتلاًa vital spot
كأنيas though I عليupon me حينwhen ترمىare shot at مَقاتلُvital spots
So wherever he shoots at me, he strikes a vital spot,
Wherever he shot me from, he hits my demise
As though, when shot at, I were nothing but vital spots.
As if I’m an enemy when arrows are released
وليلةand a night وصلٍof union ليلةُthe Night القدرof Decree أُختُهاits sister
تجلَّتcleared بهاin it الظلماءُthe darkness والبدرُwhile the full moon آفلُsetting
And a night of union, sister to the Night of Decree:
The night we reunited was like Laylat-ul-Qadr
That night the darkness lifted, though the full moon was setting.
Darkness shone and the full moon began to set
وأبصرتُand I beheld وجهاًa face قلتُI said لمّاwhen رأيتُهI saw it
ليتif only شعريmy knowledge ماwhat تقولsay العواذلُthe reproachers
And I beheld a face; when I saw it, I said:
I saw a face and when I did I said
Ah, would that I knew what the reproachers say!
I wonder what the young women would say
وماand not صَبَغَتdyed صِبغَthe coloring of الخدودthe cheeks مدامةٌwine
بهاwith it صُبِغَتwere dyed قبلbefore الخدودthe cheeks الأناملُthe fingertips
And no wine ever matched the hue of those cheeks—
Wine didn’t dye the cheeks red
Wine with which fingertips were dyed before cheeks.
The cheeks were dyed by fingers beforehand
وسكرانةand a drunken woman سكرىdrunk دلالٍwith coquetry وقوَّةٍand vigor
إذاwhen هيshe قامتrose لمdid not تَخُنهاbetray her المفاصلُthe joints
And a drunken woman, drunk with coquetry and vigor:
Intoxicated with coyness and pride’s power
When she rose, her joints did not betray her.
When she stood, her joints did not fail her
تثنَّتshe swayed بغصنٍwith a bough ذابلٍdrooping عندduring سكرهاher drunkenness
وذاand this عجبٌa marvel غصنٌa bough منfrom الريِّample watering ذابلُdrooping
In her drunkenness she swayed, a drooping bough;
She bent using a withered branch in her drunkenness
And what a marvel: a bough drooping from being well watered!
How odd that a branch from the gardens would wither
فإنso if لمnot أقُلI say ماthat which كانَwas فيin ضرِّهhis hurt المنىdesires
فواهاًthen ah! لهfor him إنَّindeed الحَنينَlonging لقائلُsurely speaks
If I do not speak of him whose hurt held my desires,
If I don’t say what the painful separation brought
Then ah, for him! Longing itself surely speaks.
What a pity, for yearning keeps speaking
ولمand not أطوِI conceal سرّيmy secret عنكمُfrom you لاتِّهامكمout of mistrust of you
ولكنbut لإفشاءfor divulging الحديثthe tale غوائلُperils
I did not conceal my secret from you out of mistrust of you,
I didn’t declare my secret fearing your blame
But divulging a tale has its perils.
But loose talk reveals hidden matters
نُجاملُwe show courtesy مَنwhoever يُبقيshows forbearance علىtoward مَنwhomever نحبُّهwe love him

We show courtesy to those who spare the one we love;
We indulge those who keep those we love
Nor will the discourteous receive unreserved forbearance.
And favors won’t remain for those who don’t indulge

And wherever I see a lover sincerely devoted to another,
Wherever I see an intimate bond
There is an envier who never sleeps, and a reproacher.
There lies an envious one, awake and blaming
