I have known you kind and ever maintaining ties with us,

giving generously even when you were not asked.

And your favors used to come in succession upon

me, through times past and times to come.

You bestowed favors without reminding me of them,

and granted kindness without holding back.

    Your generosity is nothing new,

and excellence comes only from the best.

Do you grow miserly now that I am owed consideration,

though before you gave freely and were not miserly?

    فما لي أُحَطُّ إلى أسفلِ

    When companionship grows old, it is raised in esteem;

so why am I brought down to a lower place?

If you will not improve my lot,

then keep to your original way with me.

Do you withhold your kindness from a grateful man,

more eloquent in thanking you than a ringing bell?

And I must offer you praise,

but how can I speak when you have done nothing?

Would you be content for your panegyrist at a gathering

to tell lies in that gathering?

For the grateful man's truthful praise will not continue

if acts of kindness are not continued.

    وإن أنت أغفلتَ لم أغفَلِ

    So if you wish, I shall remind you of what you have forgotten;

and if you have been heedless, I have not.
