I did not attend the gathering out of longing for

I did not attend the gathering out of longing

The words of Mansur ibn Ammar,

For the speech of Mansur ibn 'Ammar

لكن ليستمتع لي ناظري

لكن ليستمتع لي ناظري

منك فأقضي بعضَ أوطاري

منك فأقضي بعضَ أوطاري

But so that my gaze might take delight

But so my onlookers may enjoy

In you, and I might fulfill some of my desires.

Me spending some of my time

وما استماعي لكلام امرئٍ

وما استماعي لكلام امرئٍ

يزيد في شوقي وتذكاري

يزيد في شوقي وتذكاري

Nor does my listening to a man's words

And my listening to some man's speech

Increase my longing and remembrance.

Does not increase my longing and recollection

كأنه في كل ما قال لي

كأنه في كل ما قال لي

يخبرني عن بعض أخباري

يخبرني عن بعض أخباري

It was as though, in all he said to me,

As if he tells me in all he said

He was telling me something of my own story.
