كم أقاسي لديك قالاً وقيلا

وعداتٍ تترى ومطلاً طويلا

How much hardship I've endured for you in words and sayings,

Promises seen, and longing so long.

جمعة تنقضي وشهر يولّي

وأمانيك بكرة وأصيلا

A Friday passes, a month turns away,

And your wishes tomorrow and forever.

إن يَفُتني منك الجميل من الفع

ل تعاطيتُ عنك صبراً جميلا

If the beautiful in your actions escapes me,

I have endured the most beautiful patience for you.

والهوى يستزيد حالاً فحالاً

وكذا يَنسَلي قليلاً قليلا

And love only increases state after state,

As does the little trickle bit by bit.

ويك لا تأمنن صروف الليالي

إنها تترك العزيز ذليلا

Do not feel too safe from the turns of nights,

For it leaves the dear one lowly.

فكأني بحسن وجهك قد صا

حت به اللحيةُ الرحيلَ الرحيلا

So it's as if your beautiful face has bid

Farewell repeatedly, farewell repeatedly.

فتبدلت حين بدّلتَ بالنو

ر ظلاماً وساء ذاك بديلا

When you changed the light for darkness,

It was a poor substitute.

فكأن لم تكن قضيباً رطيباً

وكأن لم تكن كثيباً مهيلا

It's as if you were never a fresh twig,

Never a sloping dune.

عندها يشمت الذي لم تصله

ويكون الذي وصلتَ خليلا

Then the one you never reached gloats

While the one you reached remains a friend.
