ولمّا بدا لي منك ميلٌ مع العِدا

سواي ولم يحدث سواك بديلُ

And when I saw in you a leaning toward the foes,

When you began to incline towards hostility along with enmity

rather than me, though no replacement for you had appeared,

You became my sole preoccupation, and none could replace you

صددتُ كما صدَّ الرَّذيُّ تطاولت

صددتُ كما صدَّ الرَّذيُّ تطاولت

به مدة الأيام وهو قتيلُ

به مدة الأيام وهو قتيلُ

I turned away, as did the worn-out camel; long had grown

I was resolute as one who wards off the growth

its span of days, though it was slain.

Of a creeping plant, and slays it after the passage of time
