And tender, fair-faced maidens took me captive

Fair-faced girls with slender waists distracted me

with their talk, while the evening companions had fallen silent.

With their talk after the night was lit by the Pleiades.

يخطرنَ في بيض الثياب وصُفرِها

خمصُ البطون نواهدٌ أبكارُ

They swayed along in robes of white and yellow,

They moved about in white and yellow robes,

slender-bellied, budding-breasted virgins.

Slender-waisted virgins, tender and pure.

حتى إذا انبلج الصباحُ لناظري

حتى إذا انبلج الصباحُ لناظري

ودَّعنَني ودموعُهنَّ غزارُ

ودَّعنَني ودموعُهنَّ غزارُ

Until, when dawn broke before my eyes,

When dawn began to break before my eyes,

they bade me farewell, their tears abundant.

فسألتُهنَّ عن الزيارة قُلنَ لي

زُرنا فقد زرناك يا غَدّارُ

So I asked them about visiting; they said to me:

When I asked about another visit, they said:

“Visit us, for we have visited you, O faithless one!”
