Abandonment by the beautiful is the lot of those who never abandon.

They will betray only those who do not betray.

And when a lover keeps faith with them, they do not keep faith.

And when he puts them out of mind, they do not excuse him.

And when they themselves tire of fidelity, they reject

What had not been rejected before then.

Be kind, Abu Hasan, for I am grateful

To you, Muhammad, for what goes unspoken.

My lord, assurance in love has turned you

Away from me, because I remain constant toward you.

How strange your ease with me when you were skittish,

Yet now, when it is time for ease, you flee.

You plead that you have grown too old for desire.

Do you think you grow older, my desire, while I grow younger?

Now you are sweet, having grown a beard; for

A fruit tree's branch bears fruit only when it puts forth leaves.

And your face is like a pearl, and it is as though

The cheek-down studding both its sides were jewels.

And in its whiteness it is like the moon by day,

When the sky's green hue surrounds it.

Do not be ashamed of your beard, for it is

A screen for us, concealing us from talebearers.

Love has grown dark on their side,

But on our side it is moonlit.

This blackness is not the blackness of hair; rather,

This is an embellished book of arts.

So why are we denied in love what we hope for,

Now that we have been spared in love what we fear?
