They departed; our livers are wounded, and our eyes

are sore, and our souls are drunk with anxiety.

Our inner selves lament the burning anguish of their distance,

but our outward selves complain of fear.

They seemed, atop the riding-camels' saddles, while

the camels traveled in a linked train through pitch-dark dusk,

brilliant stars, shining in the constellations,

moving in the coursing heavens in orderly succession.

O you who made the dwelling desolate since they departed, as once it was cheered

by their nearness—may it never lack an abundant downpour!

    وإنْ حَضَرْتُم حَمَلْناكم على الحدَق

    If you are absent, you are not absent from our inmost hearts;

and if you are present, we bear you upon the pupils of our eyes.
