موَكَّلاًgiven over بالحزنto grief مَشغولاpreoccupied
That you spent the night distraught robbed me of sleep,
It kept me awake that you spent the night heart-stricken,
shackled by sorrow, all aflame,
given over to grief, preoccupied,
علىover هلالٍHilal ماnot بلغْتَyou attained المُنىthe hopes
فيهin him ولاnor نِلْتَyou gained بهthrough him السُّولاthe desired end
over the death of one—you had not realized your hopes
over Hilal—you had not attained your hopes
in him, nor gained through him the end you sought.
in him, nor gained through him your heart's desire.
فكمْfor how often خشِيناwe feared أَنْto نرىsee يومَهhis day of death
لوif only أنَّindeed لِلْمَقدورfor what is decreed تَحويلاan alteration
How deeply we feared that we would see his day—
For how often we feared to see his day of death—
if only what is decreed could be turned aside!
if only what is decreed could be changed!
لكنْbut غداbecame إشْفاقُناour anxious concern باطلاًfutile
وكانand was أمرthe decree اللهof God مَفعولاcarried out
Yet our anxious fears came to nothing,
But our anxious concern proved futile,
and God's command came to pass.
and God's decree was carried out.
فاصْبرso be patient علىwith بَلواهHis trial تلْقَyou will find الرِّضاcontentment
فالصَّبرfor patience عندat الصَّدمةthe shock الأُولىthe first
So endure His trial patiently, and you will find contentment;
So bear His trial patiently; you will find contentment,
for true patience is at the first shock.
for patience is shown at the first shock.
