المالُ يستُر كلَّ عَيبٍ ظاهرٍ

المالُ يستُر كلَّ عَيبٍ ظاهرٍ

والفقرُ يُظهِرُ كلَّ عيبٍ باطنِ

والفقرُ يُظهِرُ كلَّ عيبٍ باطنِ

Money conceals every visible flaw.

Money conceals each manifest vice

And poverty exposes every hidden flaw.

While poverty reveals each hidden flaw

فترى مثالبَ ذي اليَسار مَناقِباً

فترى مثالبَ ذي اليَسار مَناقِباً

ومَحاسِنَ الصُّعْلوكِ غيرَ مَحاسن

ومَحاسِنَ الصُّعْلوكِ غيرَ مَحاسن

So you see the wealthy man's faults as virtues,

Thus you see the faults of the wealthy as virtues

And the pauper's merits as no merits at all.

And the virtues of the destitute are no virtues at all
