هلis there منany سبيلٍway إلىto رِيقِthe saliva of المُريقِthe one spilling دَميmy blood
فماfor nothing يُزيلremoves سِوىexcept ذاكthat اللَّمىdarkness of the lips ألَميmy pain
Is there a way to the saliva of the one who spills my blood?
Is there a way to the saliva of the kisser, my blood?
For only that darkness of her lips dispels my pain.
Nothing eliminates that pain except her lips.
يَشْفِيheals بهwith it منshe whose يُهينُputs to shame الدُّرَّpearls مَنْطِقُهاher speech

She whose speech puts pearls to shame heals with it,
It heals those who degrade the pearls with their speech,
In verse and prose, with the pearls of her mouth and words.
In prose and poetry, with the full moons of lips and words.

دَمْعِيmy tears وتسكنand finds repose منfrom صدريmy breast إلىin حَرمa sanctuary
A graceful maiden roams my heart's preserve and drinks from
A gazelle that grazes the fever of my heart and drinks
My tears, and finds repose in a sanctuary within my breast.
My tears to settle down, from my chest to the sanctuary.
نادتْcalled محاسِنهاher charms العُشّاقَthe lovers مُعلِنةًproclaiming
أنّthat المَنىdeath والمُنىand wishes فيin مُقْلتيmy eye وفميand my mouth
Her charms called to the lovers, proclaiming
Her beauties called the lovers announcing
That death and desire are in my eye and my mouth.
That wishes and desires are in my eyelids and mouth.
فماso never احْتكمْتُI sought judgment وعيْنَيْهاand her two eyes إلىfrom فَمِهاher mouth
إلاّexcept شُغِلتُI became absorbed عنaway from الخَصْمينthe two disputants بالحَكَمِin the judge
So never did her eyes and I appeal to her mouth
I did not arbitrate between her eyes and mouth
Without becoming absorbed in the judge instead of the two disputants.
Except I was distracted from the two opponents by the judge.

أستارُthe veils of بحرٍa sea بماءwith the water of الموتِdeath مُلتَظِمsurging
Radiant as a white pearl, concealed by
A fawn, like a white pearl covered by
The veils of a sea surging with the water of death.
Curtains of a sea with accumulated deadly waters.
تُهْوىshe is loved فَتَهْويso fall المُنىhopes دونshort of اللَّحاقِreaching بهاher
أَفْدِيكI would ransom you مِنof أَمَمٍnearness أَعْيَاproved impossible علىfor الأُممِthe nations
She is loved, yet hopes fall short of reaching her.
She is loved so wishes plummet without catching up with her.
I would ransom you—so near, yet beyond the nations' reach.
I ransom you from nations that grew weary of nations.
زارَتْshe visited فَأَيْقَظتُso I awakened صَوْنِيmy self-restraint فيduring زيارتهاher visit
ليَقْظتيbecause of my wakefulness وَنَدَبتْand she summoned الحلْمَforbearance للحُلُمِto the dream
She visited, and during her visit I roused my self-restraint
She visited, so I awakened my chastity with her visit.
Because I was awake; she summoned forbearance to the dream.
For my wakefulness, she blamed dreams for dreaming.
آليتُI swore أسألُI seek إلْمامَa brief visit from الخيالِthe dream-phantom وليand I have
عَينٌan eye وقدand already ظَعَنَdeparted الأحبابthe loved ones لمhas not تَنَمِslept
I swore to seek the dream-phantom's visit, while I have
I asked the imam of imagination, and I have
An eye that has not slept since my loved ones departed.
An eye that stayed up while loved ones fell asleep.
كأنَّنيas though I بهمُby them أَقْسَمتُhad sworn لاnever طَمِعتit craved
طيبَthe sweetness of الكَرىslumber فأبَرَّتْso it fulfilled مُقلَتيmy eye قَسَميmy oath
As though I had sworn by them that it would never crave
It is as if I swore to them, I did not wish for
The sweetness of slumber; so my eye fulfilled my oath.
The good of times, so my eyelids absolved my oath.
وكيفand how ليfor me يَوْمَon the day سارواthey departed لوif صَحِبْتُهمُI accompanied them
مِنamong المطاياthe riding beasts ورأسيwhile my head مَوْضِعَin the place of القَدِمthe foot
And how, the day they left, could I—had I gone with them—have had
How could I, the day they left, accompany them
A mount, with my head in the place of a foot?
Riding and my head in the place of feet?
بانواthey departed فَرَبْعُso the dwelling of اصطباريmy patience مُنذsince بَيْنِهمُtheir parting
بالٍworn away كَرَبْعِهمُlike their dwelling الباليworn-out بذيat Dhu سَلَمSalam
They departed; since their parting, my patience's dwelling
They left, so my endurance since they left
Is worn away, like their worn dwelling at Dhu Salam.
Is afflicted like their afflicted with peace.
واalas وَحْشَتيmy loneliness إذwhen أُناديI call out فيamong مَعالِمِهمْtheir landmarks
صُمّاًdeaf things تُجيبُanswer بماwith what يَشفيcures منof الصَّممِdeafness
Ah, my loneliness, when among their landmarks I call
And my loneliness when I call in their dwellings
To deaf things that answer with what cures deafness.
Deaf, answering with what relieves deafness.
يَشْكُوcomplains صَداهاtheir thirst إلىto عَيْنِيmy eye فَتَمْنَحُهاso it grants them
دَمْعَاًtears إذاwhen فاضoverflowed أَغْنَاهاspared them need عنfor الدِّيَمِsteady rains
Their thirst complains to my eye, which grants them
Its echo complains to my eyes, so they give it
Tears that, when they overflow, spare them any need for steady rains.
Tears that overflow and suffice it from continuing.
وكلّماand whenever قالsaid صحبيmy companions طالَgrew long مَوْقِفُناour stay
فارْحلْso depart بناwith us قالتsaid الآثارُthe traces بلrather أَقِمstay
And whenever my companions said, 'We have lingered long—
Whenever my companions said: prolonged is our standing,
So depart with us,' the traces said, 'No, stay.'
Depart with us; the ruins said: No, stay.
كأنماas though تَسْتَمِدُّthey draw السُّقْمَsickness منfrom سَقَميmy sickness
Dwellings that fade the longer separation lasts,
Dwellings - the further the distance grew, they yearned
As though they draw sickness from my sickness.
As if drawing illness from my own illness.
قِفواhalt فَأَقْوىfor the strongest of غَراميmy passion ماwhat يُجَدِّدُهُrenews it
برَسْمِهwith its trace طَلَلٌa ruin أقوىbecame deserted علىwith القِدَمage
Halt! For my strongest passion is what is renewed
Stop, so my passion strengthens what renews it
By the trace of a ruin grown desolate with age.
Of remnants - stronger with vestige than new.
قُلtell للأُلىto those who غَرَّهمْdeceived them حِلْميmy forbearance ونَقَّصَهمْand diminished them
إيّاكمُbeware, you all وطريقَand the path of الضَّيْغَمِthe lion اللَّحِمflesh-hungry
Tell those whom my forbearance has deceived and diminished:
Say to those whose patience my calm shortened
'Beware the path of the flesh-hungry lion.'
Beware the path of tender meat.
فالحِلْمُfor forbearance جَفْنٌa sheath وإنْand if سُلَّتَّis unsheathed حَفيظتُهits indignation
فربّماthen perhaps كَشَفَتْit uncovered عنaway from صارِمٍa sharp sword خَذِمِkeen-cutting
For forbearance is a sheath; if its indignation is unsheathed,
For calm is an eyelid, and if its guardian sleeps
It may uncover a sharp, keen-cutting sword.
Perhaps a sharp ruthless sword is revealed.
