Oh, my soul's anguish for Sakhr, when into battle rushed

Cavalry against cavalry, and champions against champions.

Generous when men cast their lot-arrows,

Open-handed, lavish in giving, never reminding others of his favors.

A great chieftain, noble, pure in his nature,

Firm in cutting off his desires, no glutton.

Generous in disposition, abundant in his giving,

And a guardian of trusts, never a betrayer.

What a fine young man you are on the day of terror, as they well know,

A worthy match when horsemen clash with horsemen.

Generous in character, his qualities praised,

His edifice stands high when the builder falls short.

A refuge for widows and orphans if they go hungry,

A constant presence at private councils, a generous feeder of guests.

    Generosity's sworn ally and glory's pledged companion—what a youth!

Like a lion in war, no weakling and no laggard.
