جُهدَ العَويلِ كَماءِ الجَدوَلِ الجاري
O eye, pour forth from yourself a copious flood of tears—
O eye, pour forth your tears abundantly,
with all the force of lamentation, like the water of a running stream.
With all the force of wailing, like the water of a flowing stream.

And weep for your brother; do not forget his noble traits.
And weep for your brother, and do not forget his character.

And weep for your brother, for the sake of orphans and the widow.
And weep for your brother, for the guest’s due and the neighbor’s.
And weep for your brother, for the rights of guest and neighbor.

His virtues were abundant; his fingertips dripped with generosity.
His bounties are abundant; his fingertips are moist with generosity.
Like the full moon, he dispelled the dark, never hidden from the night traveler.
Like the full moon, he shines and is not hidden from the night traveler.
رَدّادُone who repeatedly returns عارِيَةٍa borrowed item فَكّاكُa liberator عانِيَةٍa captive woman
رَدّادُ عارِيَةٍ فَكّاكُ عانِيَةٍ
كَضَيغَمٍlike a lion باسِلٍfierce لِلقَرنِagainst the adversary هَصّارِa crusher
كَضَيغَمٍ باسِلٍ لِلقَرنِ هَصّارِ
Ever returning what was lent, ever freeing a captive woman;
A returner of borrowed goods, a liberator of captive women,
like a valiant lion, crushing every adversary;
Like a fierce lion, crushing his adversary.

a traverser of valleys, a bearer of banners;
A traverser of valleys, a bearer of banners,
open-handed, bountiful, never stingy.
Generous with both hands, bountiful, never miserly.
