أَبىrefused طولُlength لَيلِيَof my night لاnot أَهجَعُI sleep
وَقَدand indeed عالَنيoverwhelmed me الخَبَرُthe news الأَشنَعُmost dreadful
My long night denies me sleep.
My long night refused me sleep
And the most dreadful news has overwhelmed me.
Bearing the most terrible news
نَعِيُّdeath announcement اِبنِson of عَمروٍ‘Amr أَتىcame موهِناًafter nightfall
قَتيلاًslain فَماso why لِيَfor me لاnot أَجزَعُI grieve
News of the death of ‘Amr’s son came after nightfall:
The death of my cousin Amro's son
he had been slain—how could I not grieve?
Slain, so why am I not in anguish?
وَفَجَّعَنيand bereaved me رَيبُvicissitudes هَذاthis الزَمانِage
بِهِof him وَالمَصائِبُand calamities قَدcan تُفجِعُbring grief
And the vicissitudes of this age have bereaved me
Afflicted am I by the grief of this age
of him—and calamities can bring grief.
With sorrows that rend the heart
فَمِثلُfor one like حَبيبِيَmy beloved أَبكىmade weep العُيونَthe eyes
وَأَوجَعَand caused pain مَنthose who كانَused to be لاnot يوجَعُbe pained
For one like my beloved has made eyes weep,
For one I loved, eyes weep
and pained those who had known no pain.
And those not hurt are hurt the most
أَخٌa brother لِيَof mine لاnot يَشتَكيهِcomplains of him الرَفيقُthe companion
وَلاnor الرَكبُthe riders فيin الحاجَةِneed الجُوَّعُthe hungry
A brother of mine, of whom no companion complains,
A brother he was, whom no friend would blame
nor the hungry riders in need.
Nor traveling folk in hunger's throes
وَيَهتَزُّand quivers فيin الحَربِwar عِندَat النِزالِclose combat
كَماjust as اِهتَزَّquivered ذوpossessing الرَونَقِsheen المِقطَعُthe keen-cutting sword
And he quivers in war when combat is joined,
In war he'd shudder amidst the fray
as the gleaming, keen-cutting sword quivers.
As the well-groomed horse with docked tail shook
فَماso what ليhave I وَلِلدَهرِand with Time ذيpossessing النائِباتِcalamities
أَكُلُّall ...? الوُزوعِfixation بِناon us توزَعُyou are fixated
So what have I to do with Time, with its calamities?
And I and fate with its blows
Are you utterly fixated on us?
Swallowing grief as it deals them out
