My eye wept, and wailing was its due.

And the grave calamity broke my wing.

May I be rid of Time! How it has weakened my pillar,

For people whose affection is scant.

For a band of men who were my wing,

There is charm about them when you meet them.

So my brother reminded me of people who had departed.

Let me remember them as long as words are spoken.

Muʿawiyah ibn ʿAmr was my pillar,

And Sakhr was their sheltering shade.

I remembered; then it overwhelmed me and wounded my heart,

And long grief kept my people awake.

Men of might, as though they were angry,

And of glory, increased by long-standing ancestral honor.

They led Maʿadd in their boyhood,

And led whether they were young or middle-aged.

So weep, Umm ʿAmr, every day,

For a trustworthy brother with a handsome face.
