O eye, weep for a horseman,

skilled in lance-thrusts upon his horse,

possessed of strength and awe-inspiring presence.

While we placed our hopes in him, he was snatched away.

While we saw him standing forth,

    fiercely defending his battalion,

like a lion that hastened to its thicket,

    savagely guarding its prey.

He leaves the armored warrior felled,

    his nostrils dust-covered, fallen backward.

He stained the spearhead with a thrust,

and breath drives the lifeblood out.

So, among the birds, one seeks its chance,

drawing near, while another tears at flesh.

How fine a young man in battle,

when cries rang out in the pre-dawn darkness!

So I shall surely mourn you, a chief,

decisive in judgment when matters grew confused.

    Who can take his place,

after my mother's son has been buried?

Or who will offer forbearance like his

    when disputes grow bitter?

    Rain for the whole clan,

those in the lowlands and those in the uplands.
