أَمِنIs it from ذِكرِremembering صَخرٍSakhr دَمعُtears عَينِكِyour eye يَسجُمُstreams
بِدَمعٍwith tears حَثيثٍswift كَالجُمانِlike pearls المُنَظَّمِstrung together
Is it at the memory of Sakhr that your eye's tears stream,
Does the memory of Sakhr cause your eyes to shed tears
in swift drops, like pearls strung together?
With plentiful tears like pearls threaded together?
فَتىًa young man كانَwas فيناamong us لَمdid not يَرَsee الناسُpeople مِثلَهُhis like
كَفالاًa guardian لِأُمٍّfor a mother أَوor وَكيلاًa protector لِمَحرَمِfor a close relative
A young man among us, whose like no one had seen,
Among us there was a youth unlike any other,
a guardian for a mother, or a protector of a close relative.
A protector of his mother or guardian of the forbidden.
حَسيبٌnoble-born يُنالُis attained المَجدُglory مِنهُfrom him بِبَسطَةٍthrough openhandedness
وَيَعجُزُand falls short عَنof إِفضالِهِhis generosity كُلُّevery شَيظَمِtowering man
Noble-born, from whom glory is gained through openhandedness,
A lord from whom glory is easily attained,
and every towering man falls short of his generosity.
Yet all the firm mountains cannot match his generosity.
فَفَرَّقتَso you sundered فَرعَيهاits two branches وَكُنتَand you were سَدادَهاits mainstay
إِذاwhen كانَthere was يَومٌa day بالِغاًreaching كُلَّevery مُعظَمِgrave ordeal
So you sundered its two branches, though you were its mainstay,
You separated her branches and were her support
whenever a day brought every grievous trial.
On a momentous day against all formidable foes.
وَماand not ضاعَتِwere neglected الأَرحامُkinship ties عِندَكَin your care وَالَّذيand that which

Kinship ties were never neglected in your care, nor what
Relationships were never lost with you, by the one
you undertook, nor what you were entrusted to guard among them for an offender.
Whom you protected and did not fail as a guardian.
كَأَنَّas though بُغاةَseekers الخَيرِgoodness عِندَكَin your presence أَصبَحواthey came to be
عَلىon نَهَجٍan open path مِنfrom طافِحِoverflowing البَحرِthe sea خِضرِمِvast and abundant
It was as though those seeking bounty in your presence found themselves
As if the recalcitrant enemies became with you
on an open path from an overflowing, boundless sea.
On a path overflowing from the green, foaming sea.
تَوَسَّعتَyou made room لِلحاجاتِfor needs ياO صَخرُSakhr كُلِّهاall of them
فَحامَso circled إِلىtoward مَعروفِكَyour bounty المُتَنَسَّمِthe scenting seeker
You made room for every need, O Sakhr,
You were generous, O Sakhr, for all needs,
so the seeker, catching its scent, circled toward your bounty.
So the scent of your kindness diffused to the delighted.
وَأَنتَand you اِبنُson فَرعِhighest branch القَومِthe tribe ياO صَخرُSakhr كُلِّهاall of it
إِذاwhen قالَsaid فُرسانُhorsemen اللُقاbattle صَخرُSakhr أَقدِمِadvance!
And you are born of the whole tribe's highest branch, O Sakhr,
You are the son of your people’s lineage, O Sakhr,
when the horsemen of battle said, 'Sakhr, advance!'
If the horsemen of eloquence said Sakhr is the eldest.
إِذاwhen ذَكَرَتremembered نَفسيmy soul نَداهُhis generosity وَبَأسَهُand his might
تَحَسَّرَfell away عَنهاfrom it كُلُّall عَيشٍlife's pleasures وَأَنعُمِand blessings
When my soul remembers his generosity and his might,
When my soul recalls his voice and strength,
all life's pleasures and blessings fall away from it.
All life and bliss will regret the loss of him.
