Indeed, Abu Hassan is a fallen throne,

One God built within a shady shelter.

High-necked, no rival could overcome him,

Firm in judgment, mighty and tall.

    ذَلِكَ مِنهُ خُلُقٌ ما يَحول

    You would think him angry, such was his proud dignity;

That was his nature, never changing.

Woe to his mother—a kindler of war, when

Cast into it, a horseman clad in mail.

By his cauldron, high-humped she-camels suffered at his hands,

And the old she-camel, and the huge, aged, unbroken one.

Where can I find a horseman to set forth with at dawn,

Like you, when the laden camels carry me?

You left me, O Sakhr, among young men,

As though, after you, I were an outsider among them.
