أَرِقتُI lay sleepless وَنامَand slept عَنheedless of سَهَريmy wakefulness صِحابيmy companions
كَأَنَّas though النارَthe fire مُشعِلَةٌsetting ablaze ثِيابيmy clothes
I lay sleepless while my companions slept, heedless of my wakefulness.
I stayed awake while my friends fell asleep
As though fire were setting my clothes ablaze.
As if fire had set my clothes ablaze
إِذاwhenever نَجمٌa star تَغَوَّرَsank out of sight كَلَّفَتنيit burdened me
خَوالِدَenduring woes ماnot تَؤوبُreturn إِلىto مَآبِa place of return
Whenever a star sinks out of sight, I am burdened
Whenever a star disappeared below the horizon
with enduring woes that return to no resting place.
Endless sorrows led me nowhere
فَقَدfor indeed خَلّىleft أَبوAbu (father of) أَوفىAwfa خِلالاًcares
عَلَيَّupon me فَكُلُّهاso all of them دَخَلَتentered شِعابيmy ravines
For Abu Awfa has left cares
Abu Awfy deserted me on all sides
upon me, so all of them have entered my inner ravines.
Allowing sorrows to pour into me from every ravine
