َخَرقٍa vast wilderness كَأَنضاءِlike the worn tatters of القَميصِthe shirt دَوِيَّةٍdesolate
مَخوفٍfeared رَداهُits deadly peril ماnot يُقيمُstays بِهِin it رَكبُa caravan
A wasteland like the tatters of a shirt, desolate,
its deadly peril feared, where no caravan stays,
قَطَعتَyou crossed بِمِجذامِon a swift she-camel الرَواحِtravel كَأَنَّهاas though she
إِذاwhen حُطَّwas removed عَنهاfrom her كورُهاher saddle جَمَلٌa bull camel صَعبُunruly
you crossed on a swift-travelling she-camel, as though she,
when her saddle was taken off, were an unruly bull camel.
يُعاتِبُهاhe rebukes her فيfor بَعضِsome of ماwhat أَذنَبَتshe did wrong لَهُto him
فَيَضرِبُهاso he strikes her حيناًat times وَلَيسَyet there is no لَهاon her part ذَنبُfault
He rebukes her for some wrong she has done him,
then beats her at times, though she has done no wrong.
وَقَدand already جَعَلَتshe has resolved فيwithin نَفسِهاherself أَنthat تَخافَهُshe should fear him
وَلَيسَyet there is no لَهاfor her مِنهُfrom him سَلامٌpeace وَلاnor حَربُwar
And she has resolved within herself to fear him,
yet from him she has neither peace nor war.
فَطِرتَso you flew بِهاon her حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِشتَدَّgrew intense ظِمؤُهاher thirst
وَحُبَّand became dear إِلىto القَومِthe company الإِناخَةُmaking the camels kneel وَالشُربُand drinking
So you sped on her until, when her thirst grew fierce,
and the men longed to halt their camels and drink,
أَنَختَyou made her kneel إِلىbeside مَظلومَةٍa wronged tree غَيرِnot مَسكِنٍa dwelling
حَوامِلُهاits supporting limbs عوجٌcrooked وَأَفنانُهاand its boughs رَطبُfresh
you made her kneel beside a wronged tree, no dwelling,
its supporting limbs crooked and its boughs fresh.
فَناطَthen he hung إِلَيهاon it سَيفَهُhis sword وَرِدائَهُand his cloak
وَجاءَand he came إِلىto أَفياءِthe shadows of ماwhat عَلَّقَhung up الرَكبُthe riders
Then he hung his sword and cloak upon it,
and came into the shade of what the riders had hung up.
فَأَغفىthen he dozed قَليلاًa little ثُمَّthen طارَhe flew off بِرَحلِهاon her saddle
لِيَكسَبَso he might win مَجداًglory أَوor يَحورَreturn لَهاto her نَهبُplunder
He dozed a little, then flew off in her saddle,
to win glory, or for plunder to return to her.
فَثارَتthen she sprang up تُباريracing أَعوَجِيّاًan Aʿwajī horse مُصَدَّراًbroad-chested
طَويلَlong عِذارِthe bridle-strap of الخَدِّthe cheek جُؤجُؤُهُhis breast رَحبُbroad
Then she sprang up, racing a broad-chested Aʿwajī steed,
his cheek-strap long, his breast broad.
