Bir al-Azab said to Rawdat Ahmad:

We have a bathhouse and lofty houses.

Beside a fountain, the nightingale sang,

And clouds camped above us and thundered.

So tell us, old hag of the fearsome places,

What substance and graces you possess.

    Whoever passes along al-Mukhalif Street

Meets a ghoul stretched out in the darkness.

    Rawda answered with sweet words:

Easy, easy, you flame of al-Qazali!

For God's sake, move away from before me.

Whatever whiteness you have is tarnished.

The Raziqi grapes within me are plated gold,

Grapes resembling those of the land of Dalli.

A morning serving is worth a thousand plated piastres,

Like gold in the palm when counted out.

    Bir al-Azab answered swiftly:

All exquisite beauty belongs to me.

Among the orchards I have gained renown,

And conviviality is renewed here every day.

    وفي الخشب كهرب وأنسن مفقود

    As for grapes, they are found in al-Rahbib;

In al-Khashab there is amber, but conviviality is absent.

That is not counted among grounds for pride,

And you have become a dwelling-place for sorrows.

    Rawda said: You boast!

My dear, do you want to quarrel with me?

Every hour you keep bickering with me,

A caravanserai for the Banyans, and a mujarrad.

What have we to do with boasting of mosques,

Or anyone bowing and prostrating in the darkness?

She answered: Are you not one of the old women?

Those cheeks of yours resemble glass shards.

The mistress of the house is not like little girls.

    Bir al-Azab answered in fairness:

If you have one stream, I have thousands.

May God never bring you back, old hag of the boulders!

Is that your forehead, or a blazing heap?

    وفي غصوني تسجع الحمامه

    I have a breeze more delicate than wine;

Among my boughs the dove coos,
