1. يقول الجعدبي حق ابن زايد

    مساعد هو حضر حرب ابن ردمان

    Al-Jaʿdabi of Ibn Zayid says:

    Musaʿid—he was present at Ibn Radman's war.

  2. سقى الله يوم خرجناهج واحد

    ودغمرنا على قيفه وسنحان

    May God water the day we set out in one rush,

    and charged against Qayfah and Sanhan.

  3. وناصلنا الجهادم بالمعارد

    بقا الهارب إلى ريده وذيفان

    And we fought the Jahadim with the maʿarid.

    The fleeing ones kept on toward Raydah and Dhifan.

  4. خرجنا الفين حلين السواعد

    بنجري في العوارض جرى سرحان

    We set out two thousand, with forearms bared,

    running across the ridges as a wolf runs.

  5. وحطينا المفارس والمعاود

    كما أن الحاضيه ناموس الانسان

    And we put the mafaris and the maʿawid in place,

    as the rifle is a man's honor.

  6. وشلينا البيارق حق حاشد

    وبيتنا الكسيره بيت مران

    And we took the banners belonging to Hashid,

    and lodged the routed force overnight at Bayt Marran.

  7. وهد الله صلاح شيخ المساجد

    نهب بندق على سعد بن قعسان

    And may God bring down Salah, sheikh of al-Masajid:

    he plundered rifles from Saʿd bin Qaʿsan.

  8. ومفتاح وابن ملخج وابن راشد

    بقوا يتعاكروا في وسط مجران

    And Miftah, Ibn Malkhaj, and Ibn Rashid

    kept fighting one another in the middle of Majran.

  9. وناس انحط الى محروس زاجد

    وناس جاله كذا وامسى بسيان

    And some hurried down to Mahrous,

    and some had it happen thus, and evening found them in Siyan.

  10. وسندنا بني الحارث مساند

    وعاودنا العشى من باب جربان

    And we went up to Bani al-Harith as reinforcements,

    and returned in the evening from the gate of Jarban.

  11. وتسمع قطقطة مثل الرواعد

    بنادق قدلها من عهد عثمان

    And you hear a crackling like thunderclaps—

    rifles dating back to ʿUthman's time.

  12. ومعصار لا تقل قد صار زاهد

    بذا المعصر تعسى قبل شعبان

    And Maʿsar—do not say he has become an ascetic:

    at this press he supped before Shaʿban.

  13. وقد لفلف يجي ستين وفارد

    من اطراف الحليله وأهل سهمان

    And he had gathered about sixty, and one more,

    from the outskirts of al-Halilah and the people of Sahman.

  14. وجاشيخ القذف مثل ام قالد

    تجاهه لا تقل خمسة بعيدان

    And the sheikh of al-Qadhf came like Umm Qalid.

    Facing him—do not say merely five far-off men.

  15. ولي طير غدا والحرب هامد

    وقع له بندقين من حق حسان

    And a bird of mine set out in the morning while the fighting lay still;

    two of Hassan's rifles fell to him.

  16. وزاغفنا رصاص والله شاهد

    وترينا شويط واصحاب طشان

    And we traded bullets, and God is witness,

    and fired on Shuwayt and Tashan's men.

  17. ومكنا ابن حنظل لقف بارد

    وقال نخلف على قوم ابن قملان

    And we secured Ibn Hanzal a cold catch,

    and he said: Let us turn back upon Ibn Qamlan's people.

  18. وخلينا المطارح سيل وارد

    وترينا جدر واصحاب شعلان

    And we left the camps an onrushing torrent,

    and fired on Jidr and Shaʿlan's men.

  19. وخلينا هزم كله فدافد

    وأودا بعدنا مفلح وجبران

    And we left all of Hazm a barren waste,

    and Muflih and Jubran went on after us.

  20. وفوق الكحلى مرديف جامد

    وقد ذاله معه من نهب خولان

    And on the dark-eyed one was a stiff pillion rider,

    and he already had this with him from the plunder of Khawlan.

  21. تعسكرنا وعاد الدم راقد

    وعاد العسكره قبلا لها شأن

    We took to soldiering while the blood still slept,

    and soldiering still had its standing back then.

  22. وكانت بندقي سبعه وزايد

    رصاصتها تولى فج عطان

    And my rifle was seven and more;

    its bullet headed for the pass of ʿAttan.

  23. وبه باروت معي من شغل خالد

    تراه كله مجلجل روس ذبان

    And I have gunpowder of Khalid's making;

    you see it—all rattling grains like flies' heads.

  24. وعادك يا سعيد معصار حاقد

    بعزقة صاحب الحزه وسعوان

    And you, Saʿid Maʿsar, are still resentful

    at the squandering of the lord of al-Hazzah and Saʿwan.

  25. ويافع أطلعوا فينا قصايد

    وجوب من قد انا سعد شملان

    And Yafiʿ composed poems about us,

    and the reply is indeed from me, Saʿd Shamlan.
