We'll shake them up on moonlit nights.

نسمر ونحظا على نغم الربيب

ونسمع الطبل مثل الطنبره

ونسمع الطبل مثل الطنبره

We'll sit up together, delighting in the rabab's melody,

And hear the drum sound like the tanbura.

إذا دعيته فما اسرع محضره

No friend but one whose house is near:

When you call him, how swiftly he appears!

And he chatters: “Coming! At your service! Shame, shame!”

Take heart: a brave fellow with a mighty rumble!

A moustache-twirler, his whiskers seemingly a wolf's,

And a tuft beneath his lip like a lark's head.

And above it, a plantation—a luxuriant moustache;

And side-whiskers like sorghum tassels.

And in merrymaking, I think he never disappoints;

And at weddings, he fires the gun.
