وَذَلكand that ظلمan injustice لَيسَdoes not يَعدلهequal it ظُلمany injustice
Are you not known for disguising the defects of furs?
Are you not known for misrepresenting furs?
That is an injustice no other injustice can equal.
And that is an injustice no other injustice can equal.
تَبيعونَهاyou sell them مِنto جاهلينpeople unaware بِأَمرِهاof their condition
مَزوقةpainted over مَحسومةtrimmed down مالَهاthey have no رَسمtrace
You sell them to people ignorant of their true condition,
You sell them to people ignorant of their condition,
ornamented and shorn, with no shape to them.
Painted over and trimmed down, with no trace left.
تَقعقعthey rattle مثلlike الشَقsplit fragments فَوقَupon جُسومهمtheir bodies
فَلَيسَso does not بِهاfrom them فيin البَردthe cold يَنتَفعbenefit الجسمthe body
They clatter like ornaments over their bodies,
They rattle like split fragments upon their bodies,
yet in the cold the body gains no benefit from them.
So the body gains no benefit from them in the cold.
وَتَمتدand they stretch إِمّاif مَسهاtouches them بَعضa little نَدوةmoisture
وَإِنand if مَسَهاtouches them شَيءٌanything مِنof الحرthe heat تَنضمthey contract
They stretch whenever a little dampness touches them,
And they stretch if a little moisture touches them,
and if any heat touches them, they contract.
And if any heat touches them, they contract.
فَإِنso if قَعَدواthey sit down تَنفخthey blow air لَهُمfor them فيinto وجوههمtheir faces
كَأَكيارlike bellows حدادa blacksmith إِذاwhen اِشتَعلcatches fire الفَحمthe charcoal
When their wearers sit, they billow into their faces,
So if they sit down, the furs blow air into their faces,
like a blacksmith’s bellows when the charcoal catches fire.
Like a blacksmith's bellows when the charcoal catches fire.
فَهُنso they إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle البردُthe cold صالَتcharge جُيوشَهits armies
سِواءٌequal عَلىto مَنwhoever يَستترcovers himself بِهِwith it وَالعَدمand nothingness
When the armies of cold come charging, these furs
So when the cold's armies charge, these furs
are, to anyone sheltering in them, the same as nothing.
Are no better than nothing to whoever covers himself with them.
تَبيعونَهاyou sell them بِالربحat a profit نَقداًfor cash وَأَنتُمwhile you
إِلىuntil أَمدa set term اِبتَعتموهاyou bought them وَذاand that غشمinjustice
You sell them for ready cash at a profit, though you
You sell them at a profit for cash, while you
bought them on deferred payment—and that is oppression.
Bought them on credit for a set term—and that is injustice.
وَيَنفَعُand help بَعضsome بَعضكمothers among you فيin شِرائهاbuying them
وَفاعلand the doer of ذاthis بِالشَيخwith the elder اِبليسَIblis يأتمtakes as his guide
Some of you assist others of you in purchasing them,
And some of you help others among you in buying them,
and whoever does so takes Sheikh Iblis as his imam.
And whoever does this takes the elder Iblis as his guide.
وَإِنand even if جازَit is permissible وَالمُضطَرand the man in dire need وَافقagrees غالِباًusually
وَيَقصرُand he falls short عَنof إِدراكobtaining غالsomething costly فَيغتمso he is distressed
Even if the bargain goes through and the desperate buyer usually agrees,
And even if it is lawful, the man in dire need usually agrees,
he cannot afford anything costly, and so he grieves.
And cannot obtain a costly one, so he is distressed.
فَيبتاعso he buys ماwhat لاno خَيرَgood فيهِin it وَقَدand already رَأىhe has judged
لِفَرطbecause of extreme اِضطِرارnecessity أَنthat ماwhat اِبتاعَهُhe bought it غُنمa gain
Thus he buys what has no good in it, having come to regard,
So he buys what has no good in it, having come to think,
through sheer necessity, what he bought as a gain.
From sheer necessity, that what he has bought is a gain.
وَماذاand what عَسىcan المُضطرthe man in dire need يَصنَعهhe does it وَقَدwhen already
تَمعرhas changed color مِنهُof him الوَجهthe face وَانقعرand has hollowed out الجسمthe body
What can the desperate man possibly do when
And what can the man in dire need do, when already
his face has grown pinched and his body hollowed out?
His face has changed color and his body has hollowed out?
مُزابنةbarter of uncertain equivalence تَفضيleads إِلىto غايةthe utmost extent الرباusury
وَذَلكand that ثلمa nick بالديانةin religion بَلrather خرمa rent
It is muzābanah, leading to the furthest extreme of usury;
Barter of uncertain equivalence, leading to the height of usury;
that is a breach in religion—indeed, a rupture.
And that is a nick in religion—rather, a rent.
وَمَنand whoever يكis ربحُprofit السوءevil أُسّاًa foundation لمالهfor his wealth

وَيَبنِand builds عَلَيهِupon it فَالَّذيso what فَعلhe has done الهَدمdemolition
Whoever makes wicked profit the foundation of his wealth
And whoever has ill-gotten gain as his wealth's foundation
and builds upon it—what he has wrought is demolition.
And builds upon it—what he has done is demolition.
