شَرِبتُI drank بِكَأسِfrom the cup of الهَوىpassion نَبذَةًa little مَعاtogether

Together, I drank a little from passion’s cup.
And the wine of union shimmered in the goblet of estrangement.

So the wine-jars of separation tilted, driven by youth.
Then they shattered the flasks of my sorrow upon my breast.
وَكانَand was مَزاجُthe admixture of الكَأسِthe cup غِلَّةُthe rancor of لَوعَةanguish
وَدَورَقَand the decanter هِجرانُabandonment وَقنينَتيand my bottle غَدرtreachery
And the cup’s admixture was the rancor of anguish.
And the decanter was abandonment, and my bottle treachery.
