The servant hopes for a slave of his own,

for loneliness to give way to companionship.

She will draw him out of the night of his obsessive thoughts

with a countenance that shines like the sun.

For the loneliness of exile has stirred

anguish and madness that lay dormant.

So do not let his devil destroy

the foundation piety has made firm.

So sign today to grant his request,

from what the fleet took captive yesterday.

May you ever give freely of what has been won

by your sword—dark-eyed and dusky-lipped women.

And after her, I hope for

noble women among the captives from Jerusalem.
