O dwellers of Egypt—no, by God, you do not share

my longing, whose burning pangs have seared my heart.

I now seek the paths of patience, to tread them.

Far beyond reach! Its pathways have become hidden from me.

Indeed, I am preoccupied with the anguish of the day of parting.

Perhaps my Lord will dispel it with a day of reunion.

    والعينُ بحرُ دموعٍ فاضَ مائجُهُ

    In the heart is a fire of cares that its kindler has intensified;

and the eye is a sea of tears whose surging tide has overflowed.

I never said that my heart's dweller had gone

without its turmoil rising at the mention of you.

When, I wonder, will a meeting with you be possible for me,

and its joys enchant me as I desire?

The heart has remained with you, seeking repayment

of the debt of reunion—are its needs not fulfilled?

Who hedged your rose with myrtle?

And who roused the heart at the sight of your face?

I would ransom your beauty with my father—how radiant it is!

Whoever is delighted by reunion is not troubled by it.
