May God pardon you—give those who yearn relief!

For hearts and souls among us have perished.

Did you not know that I am rich in longing?

Did you not know that I am bankrupt of patience?

    فهلاّ بعثتمْ طيفَكُم يَتجسّسُ

    You thought my eye was accustomed to slumber;

then why did you not send your phantom to investigate?

My heart has no dealings with joy,

for my heart is an endowment, bound forever to sorrows.

God curse the sons of this age; as for each of them,

al-Mutalammis has done away with his scroll.

they had beset us; can darkness remain beside the sun?

his reins, the sun is held back by the battle-dust.

while each of them shrinks from the call of truth.

through your guidance there, and Tunis will be comforted.

is trussed up upon capture, in the fetters of abasement.

    وأَبيضكمْ من أسودِ القصرِ أَشوس

    And you whitened the face of the faith the day you met them;

and your white blade is fiercer than the palace's black warrior.

and purity would not be gained without defilement.

And Umar is none other than his namesake's likeness:

fierce against enemies, steadfast and formidable.
