ما أَعلمُ والحظُّ عزيزُ الدَّرَك

ما أَعلمُ والحظُّ عزيزُ الدَّرَك

لمْ أُحْرَمُ تقبيلَ يمينِ المَلك

لمْ أُحْرَمُ تقبيلَ يمينِ المَلك

I do not know—with fortune so hard to attain—

I know not why fortune barred the way

why I am denied kissing the king's right hand.

That I might kiss the king's hand this day.

يا مَنْ بمرادهِ مدارُ الفَلَكِ

يا مَنْ بمرادهِ مدارُ الفَلَكِ

أَبشرْ بوقوعِ شاكرٍ في الشرك

أَبشرْ بوقوعِ شاكرٍ في الشرك

O you by whose will the celestial sphere revolves,

O thou whose will the circling spheres obey,

rejoice at a grateful man's fall into the snare.
