Did the breeze bring us the fragrance of aromatic herbs,
The breeze has brought us the scent of flowers,
or the sweetness of my neighbors' character in Jayrun?
Or is it my good neighbors with their perfume?

A fragrant breath blew to us in Jilliq before dawn,
A whiff came to us in the still of dawn,
revealing a hidden secret from Paradise.
Whispering of paradise's hidden boons.

And from its quarters wafted a sweet-smelling fragrance;
From its corners wafted such a lovely fragrance,
every sorrowful person drew joy from it.
Bringing joy to every melancholic soul.

It blew, awakening my limbs and rousing them
It roused me, awakened my senses,
within me, and making me disdain drowsiness.
Made me lose myself in rapturous swoon.

And we did not know: had Darayya spread its fragrance for us,
We wondered, did it come from our abode,
or had a perfumer from Darin passed through our home?
Or was it some perfumer's skillful boon?

We travel by night and delight in inhaling a fragrance
We breathed deep and relaxed, inhaling
that blew shortly before dawn over roses and eglantine.
A magic scent of petals and eglantine.

And many a care we lost on its hill,
By it we lost every care and worry,
and many a heart we found at Qulbayn.
And gladdened each sorrowing heart.

Had I no courage, I'd not persist

Crossing the bridge of euphoria.

To me, Damascus's virtues cannot be counted,
To me, Damascus has so many virtues,
by numbering or reckoning—though Yabrin's sands can be counted.
Beyond counting, like desert grains.

And I see no other city that equals it
No other city can equal its beauty,
in beauty, from Egypt to the farthest bounds of China.
From Egypt to China's farthest end.

In every quarter of it is a nest for the broken,
In every corner a shelter for the broken,
and a dwelling a poor person never tires of.
An open house for each poor man.

And whoever sells his entire lifetime, content
One who sells his life, content
with one hour in its shelter, is not cheated.
With one hour in its locales, is no fool.

When my ambition rose high, I made it my homeland,
When my ambition soared, I made it my homeland,
and none but the lowly are content with what is low.
As only the best will satisfy my soul.

Its Maytur comes your way at times, and its Nayrab
Its features bring you joy or grief by turns,
at times; it bestows kindness on you through beauty.
Repaying good with goodness, evil in kind.

You see its pavilions soaring into the air,
Its towers pierce the very sky,
as though they were palaces for sultans.
Like palaces for sovereigns.

An abode of bliss—and among its least beauties
Abode of bliss! The least of its attractions
are the fruits of Tammuz in the days of Kanun.
Is fruit in winter, bounty for all time.

Its bliss is not denied to those who dwell there,
Its delights are freely given to inhabitants,
as in Paradise; the bounty there is unceasing.
Like paradise, sustenance guaranteed.
