دمشقُDamascus تقصدُbreaks عظميmy bones
بعرقةٍwith a gnawing أيِّwhat a عرقهْgnawing
Damascus breaks my bones
Damascus visits my bones
with a gnawing—what a gnawing!
With a ride, what a ride
إخفاقُهُits failure لرجائيfor my hope
فيهاin her وللقلبِand for the heart خَفْقَهْa flutter
My hope meets failure
Its failure to my hopes
in her, and the heart a flutter.
In it and the heart's throbbing
أَقمتُI dwelt فيهاin her وحيداًalone
كالدُّرِّlike a pearl ضمّتْهُenclosed it حُقَّهْa small casket
I dwelt there alone,
I stayed in it alone
like a pearl enclosed in a casket.
Like a pearl hugged by its oyster
