Ah, may God curse a night when I was bitten
O how Allah brought me a night of torment
hard by fleas in its pitch-black darkness.
With its mosquitoes that bit and stung

Its bedbugs drank my blood, then sang,
They drank of my blood and sang happily
and its gnats danced in ecstasy.
While their young ones danced in pleasure

I had stripped off my clothes in my distress,
I stripped my clothes in agony
yet I put on shirts made of them.
Except for the shirt they made me wear

Whenever I strove more zealously to fend them off
The more I tried to keep them from my bed
and keep their mischief from my bed, they grew more eager.
The more eager they grew in their greed

Among them were fleas I took for leaping,
Of mosquitoes I was left with swarms
flying creatures whose wings had been clipped.
Swarms with wings all numbered

The two factions paraded their army around me,
They flanked their legions all around me
and their numbers were beyond counting or reckoning.
More loyal than any army counted

Had Sanjar attacked the Ghuzz with them one day,
If Sindjar marched them to battle one day
he would not have left a single one of them on earth.
He'd leave of them on earth not a soul
