My two friends from ʿAmr, halt and recognize

Sahma's dwelling between Līna and al-Ḥabl.

Its people departed when it grew barren,

though once they had lived there without drought or dearth.

And in the dwelling that stirred my passion there was

a cure for heartache, if only our company were reunited.

And among them was a delicate woman, her two sashes hanging loose,

with rounded buttocks and plump limbs.

Chaste, she has two colors: black and radiant white,

and two qualities—something of delicacy and of honey.

Her face is white, bright with radiance,

and her crown is black in tress and root.

How strange these people, staring at me,

as though they had seen no lover after me or before me!

They tell me, 'Break away; all your reason will return.'

Yet parting from the soul's beloved drives reason farther away.

And how strange, my love for the one who kills me,

as though I repay him with affection for killing me!

And among love's clear proofs is that her kin were

dearer to my heart and eye than my own kin.
