عَدُوّاً وَلَمْ أُصْبِحْ لِقُرْبِكَ قَالِيا
May it gladden you that I did not heed a slanderer against you—
Let it please you that I did not obey a slanderer,
an enemy—nor did I grow averse to being near you;
An enemy, nor in the mornings was I an ignoble hanger-on.
وَأنِّيand that I لَمْdid not أَبْخَلْI act stingily عَلَيْكَtoward you وَلَمْand did not أَجُدْI give generously
وَأنِّي لَمْ أَبْخَلْ عَلَيْكَ وَلَمْ أَجُدْ
لِقَهْرِكَto overpower you إلاَّexcept بالذيwith what لاnot أُبَالِياI care
لِقَهْرِكَ إلاَّ بالذي لا أُبَالِيا
and that I was not stingy with you, nor did I give generously
And that I was not miserly with you nor did I find
to overpower you, except with what I cared nothing for.
To subdue you anything but that which I do not care for.

And when we alighted in the shade of the meadow and dew,
And when we descended to the shade of the garden and the dew,
lovely, and in a garden adorned with blossoms,
Graceful and an orchard of light encompassing,
أَجَدَّrenewed لَنَاfor us طِيبُpleasantness المكانِthe place وحُسْنُهُand its beauty

مُنىً تَمَنَّيْنَا فَكُنَّ أَمَانِيَا
the place’s pleasantness and beauty renewed for us
The goodness of the place and its beauty readied for us
wishes we wished for, which remained mere wishes.
A wish we had wished for, so wishes became realities.
