Gray hair has settled in and has no wish to leave.

And youth fulfilled its desire, then went away.

May you never be far away, dark-haired one full of delight,

And vitality that leaves the sick restored to health.

You would not have sold it for anything one could buy,

    Ever—even if I had made a profit.

A greeting, then, to youth, that visitor

Who comes at dawn and calls by night, night and morning.

And to the newcomer, when he wished to stay,

Welcome! He sought honorable conduct and righteousness.

So leave youth: it has gone its way,

And look with your own eye at a brightly flashing thundercloud.

The east wind kept driving it as fawns are driven,

From Laʿlaʿ until it shone and flashed.

Dark in its cloud banks, it defied the winds above the hills,

    Kneeling above them, unrelenting.

Then it rose over Kuhayl of Banu Qanan, upon the summits,

In dusky and black masses seeking broad valleys.

And it was as though the pilgrims' voices at evening,

As they sought salvation with their voices raised,

Were within it, with the voices of mother camels parted from

Their young, crying on afterward at evening.

It envelops the wild beasts in an outpouring of its water,

Like waterskins you have filled with winds.

And you see ranks of wild beasts along their edges,

Like Shamud [perhaps Thamud], the day al-Fadil [perhaps the camel calf] bellowed and cried out.

And Yathrib, when its downpour swept over it, seemed

A town whose people cried for help [li-bayaha: unclear reading].
