وَلَمَّا أَبى إلاَّ جِماحاً فُؤادُهُ

وَلَمَّا أَبى إلاَّ جِماحاً فُؤادُهُ

وَلَمْ يَسْلُ عَنْ لَيْلَى بِمَالٍ ولا أَهْلِ

وَلَمْ يَسْلُ عَنْ لَيْلَى بِمَالٍ ولا أَهْلِ

And when his heart would do nothing but run wild,

and neither wealth nor family made him forget Layla,

تَسَلَّى بأُخرى غَيْرِها فإذا التي

تَسَلَّى بأُخرى غَيْرِها فإذا التي

تَسَلَّى بها تُغْرى بليلَى ولا تُسْلي

تَسَلَّى بها تُغْرى بليلَى ولا تُسْلي

he sought solace in another woman—but behold, the one

in whom he sought solace stirred his longing for Layla and did not console him.
