Your good opinion of the days is a failing.

Expect evil, then, and remain fearful of them.

Beware your world: it has taken the path of treachery.

It has become devoted to cutting off free people.

A distress of mine has never eased throughout the days.

Faithfulness has ebbed, treachery overflowed, and widened

The distance of discrepancy between speech and action.

The lofty are humiliated, and glory is their crime.

Yet the deficient find their draught unclouded in this age.

Their warfare cannot be withstood, so great is their power.

Their lies have disfigured your truthfulness among people.

Can anything crooked agree with something straight?

People, while alive, are the death of lofty deeds.

Beware: every blameworthy trait is among their marks.

Treachery and guile are among the least of their qualities.

If anything proves effective in keeping them steadfast

To their pledges, it is the sword preceding reproach.

No report of an untroubled life remains in this age.

Every hoped-for benefit and kindness is harm.

Every seeming clarity among humankind is murk.

O you who come to the dregs of a life wholly murky,

You spent your clear portion in your earliest days.

O you who cherish hopes whose nearest has departed,

Gently—do not suffer over what you seek.

Take from life what destiny ordains.

Why plunge into the sea's deep and ride upon it,

When a sip of its scant water would suffice you?

Contentment does not disappoint seekers, nor

Does one striving for a hope attain it.

Nothing beyond what the Merciful decreed will be reached.

The kingdom of contentment need not be feared for, nor

Does it require supporters or servants.

Whatever destiny has brought has arrived.

Whatever it has hindered has not been gained through toil.

How many a hope I attained without striving toward it!

Be content and gain esteem; do not covet and be humbled, nor

Hurry and stumble; do not be deceived by hope.

How many your world has felled who prepared for it!

How many persisted in their delusion there, infatuated,

Until the world's joy became anguish for them!

You hope to remain in an abode that has no permanence.

Have you ever heard of a shadow that does not shift?

Alas for a bygone age—if only it could return!

Or I could obtain a sight and sound of its beauty.

Benefit, then, from the admonition of the days.

O knowledgeable one, acquainted with secrets,

Be silent: in silence lies deliverance from stumbling.

Seek the utmost and finest earnest endeavor.

Leave aside the lowest and easiest gains of wealth.

Make your ending good, as you made your beginning good.

They have chosen you for a task, if you perceive it.

Hold yourself too high to graze among neglected beasts.
