What is this light that dazzles the horizon,

    And shines, veiling its sides?

It is my mount, my little poet,

And radiance shines from its lamp-niche.

It has crossed every gust to reach you,

And the low sweep of the deeps amid its surging waves.

And Ayos appeared above the horizon's expanse,

Carrying the lights in his chariots.

What a vessel—its veils are light,

And its sail is of pure ether!

The lights enfolded it in their ample cavalcade,

And its ray approached the edge of the billows.

So they appeared like lanterns, one after another,

Around it; above them its gleam flutters.

Or visions in slumber—it appeared radiant,

Its sails gathered their phantoms to it.

It glided gently through the darkness like a dream,

Of gold upon a silver wing,

One of the visions at sleep's onset, as they drift

    Swiftly from closed eyes.

Around it, two waves have enfolded it,

And within them it flutters like a flash.

Magic is reflected upon it at every moment,

In radiant visions of all that is pure.

You, my poet, have endured patiently

In a life beset by impermanence.

It is a dream-vision, and its awakening is death,

And a wasteland whose sky is mirage.

You begin life where you come to an end:

    Blackness over an empty hive.

And a day passing through the courtyard of two nights—

That is life, and it is an imaginary lifespan.

Ah, my poet, you have endured patiently

In torment that has surpassed every torment.

It is as though I see you in thought's rapture,

    Ailing, complaining of afflictions.

I wonder, would you agree to accompany me to Paradise,

The dwelling of herds of young gazelles,

Where you find the hopes you long for,

    In drinks and garments.
