    أَلِفَ الغِناءَ بِظِلِّها الزَرزورُ

    We had a little tree beside the fence;

The starling grew used to singing in her shade.

Spring began to visit her in secret,

And light poured from her into the garden,

Until, when morning came, there breathed

Within her the flowers, and the sparrow chirped.

And through all the garden's earth there spread

The news of spring and its enchanted caravan.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

I used to sit facing her on my balcony,

Or sit beneath her in my shaded shelter,

Or watch her starling in the forenoon,

Radiant with joy, visiting my room's windows.

At times it pecked at the glass, and at times

Rose, twittering in the nests of my porch.

And when it saw me, it flew in a song,

White, and ranged over all my little tree's branches.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

When will its call return, and when shall I see

Your snowy blossoms, O my bitter-orange tree?

And when shall I fly to you, my heart dancing

With joy, and take my seat on my balcony?

Alas, I shall never forget my seat in your shade,

As I watched the horizon with half-closed eyes.

    Sweet memories choked my eyelids,

Of your moonlike perfume and the radiant melody.

Then from you there flowed over my weary feelings

A spring of melody, silvered in imagination.

And the soul fluttered over you from the valley of sorrow,

To drink deeply of the wine of white fragrance.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

Alas, I shall never forget a September forenoon,

With bees thronging your glittering blossom,

And a March evening—how it descends, a hill

    Of twilight, with bounded shade.

It descended into the garden beneath phantoms of dew,

And spread over you with perfumed skirts.

And there, how many golden things enraptured

My soul, which then strayed through meadows of fancy.

And here the little tree stirred in sorrow,

And spring wept for her forsaken image.

She remembered the days of youth and moaned,

As though she were a lute in sorrow's hand.

And she remembered days when her blossom was sipped

By the saliva of forenoon, and the starling twittered.

And the bitter-orange brides dreamed in the dew,

And their enchanted phantom fluttered within them.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

And she remembered flowers beside the fence,

Yellow, fluttering in the boxthorn's shade.

The marigold blossom—how it betrayed her pledges,

Forgetting love amid her radiant perfume.

And with a shudder she remembered how it stole

Her starling from her, without a qualm.

And here a tremor coursed through the little tree,

And she wept, longing for the wafting fragrance.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

And she remembered twilight glowing red

Through the clouds over the hills of late afternoon.

And the casuarina's branches appeared as though

They were sails fluttering on seas of imagination.

And here the little tree stirred in sorrow,

And spring wept for her forsaken image.

She remembered the days of youth and sighed,

As though she were a lute in sorrow's hand.

And she remembered palm trees and a hoopoe

That used to visit her morning and evening.

And she remembered a dove in the tangerine tree,

Which used to lament through the moonlit night.

And here the little tree stirred in sorrow,

And spring wept for her forsaken image.

She remembered the days of youth and swayed,

As though she were a lute in sorrow's hand.

And a cloud spread over all the branches,

And the twig flourished, and the blossoms opened.

And the starling rejoiced among her leaves,

And the fence shone, and perfumes wafted.

She dreamed of a faraway land in imagination,

In that remote and distant horizon.

And there, beneath the azure of its sky,

She longed for her blue dreams.

She surrendered to a silence settled there,

Over which the shadows' flutterings lay hushed.

It is a paradise of trees and shadows and

    Perfumes, melodies, and dews.

Water lilies blossom upon its shores,

And the oleander courts the lotus flower.

And the bitter-orange brides, their perfume wafting,

Dream of bees in the sunlit stillness.

And there a starling is always singing,

And recounts the dreams of sleepy flowers.

It tells them a magical legend

From what the narcissus's imagination breathes forth.

She was ours—if only she had stayed ours,

Or the starling had kept calling above her.

My bitter-orange tree—by God, since you left me,

I have been the ally of a mute melancholy.

After you, I fell into desolate dejection,

And because of it I am like a winter evening.

    Perfumes scatter across its horizons:

My soul goes toward you, beyond every expanse,

And flutters in the corridor of every ray

Of moonlight, or every white hymn.

I had hoped that my end would come

In this wall's shade, where I could see you,

And that the last thing to lull my hearing

    Would be your calling starling above your crown;

And through my unconsciousness would drift, awakening me,

A dawn of brief revival from your fragrance.

And now, since fate has hastened, only

The image of your fragrance will rise in memory.

    أَلِفَ الغِناءَ بِظِلِّها الزَرزورُ

    We had a little tree beside the fence;
