وَالصَمتُand the silence يَجثُمُcrouches خَلفَهُbehind it الأُفُقُthe horizon
وَالصَمتُ يَجثُمُ خَلفَهُ الأُفُقُ
The day has departed, and dusk has come.
And behind the silence crouches the horizon.

هذا الضَبابُ وَيَلمَحُ الشَفَقُ
And in the garden, unfurling its procession,
Is this mist, while the afterglow glimmers.

بَينَ السَحائِبِ كَوكَبٌ خِفقُ
And the great trees tremble; stealing glances at them
Between the clouds is a flickering star.

Hush! For evening here is like one humbled in awe,
In the monastery, his heart shrouded in dread.

And the garden droops with drowsiness; no
Bird flutters within it, nor any leaf.

Darkness has let fall its deep desolation
Over the dwellings, and the roads have emptied.

Yonder, a shepherd vanished as he descended
Behind the fence, and dusk enfolded him.

Cloud-veiled, burning above its hills?

Emerging from behind the green hills.
