O herald of morning, dawn has called out,

And morning draws the veils from its radiance.

And the sun sends its greeting to the world,

And seeks a lofty perch among the treetops.

These shepherds serenade the morning in delight,

And the field unfolds its wonders in the forenoon.

Rise; fill the morning with your voice that gladdens us,

O enchantment of morning, the morning has dawned!

I have roamed every corner of the land, far from home,

From the port of Damietta to the slopes of Aswan,

Hoping to find a likeness matching you in serenity,

Or lightness, or your bewitching beauty.

I have never found any but you, my buffalo,

A wild creature in the lovely village that captivates us.

From what fountain of beauty is a glow drawn

By your eyes? Is Harut's magic in our valley?

Oh, the magic of your steps as you walk, following

Your mother toward the field in the morning, full of joy!

The country girl chants her song to you,

And crosses the green canals in delight.

When I hear you, the countryside passes in steady procession

Before my eyes; it meets me, and I meet it.

I see the fields and survey the countryside close at hand:

Sun and shade and trees and waters.

How fitting to take the flowers of the hills as food,

And for your pasture to lie among the basil.

    بَل أَنتِ فاتِنَتي يا حُسنَ مَرآكِ

    I call you my buffalo—no, you are my companion;

Rather, you are my enchantress—oh, how lovely you look!

On your milk, the countryside nourished its young men,

So they became stalwart heroes there,

Each a man of resolve, steadfast in the face of terror,

Whose harvest has won honor and acclaim.

If I had a brush of lofty artistry,

Quivering with inspiration in the realm of images,

Then I would paint you in a garden forever lush,

Spacious, where you pass the forenoon in the waterwheels' shade,

Or upon a plain stretching out from the Pyramids,

Or on the hills of eternity, in Isis's paradise,

You graze freely, wandering as you walk,

You pass the morning drowsy at Apis's side.
