لَقَد كانَ مِثلَ النَسيمِ الخَفِيِّ

لَقَد كانَ مِثلَ النَسيمِ الخَفِيِّ

يُحَسُّ وَلا يَرتَئيهِ البَصَر

Indeed, it was like the unseen breeze,

felt, yet not perceived by sight.

فَلَمّا تَجافَيتَ شاعَ الهَوى

فَلَمّا تَجافَيتَ شاعَ الهَوى

وَأَصبَحَ مِثلَ شُعاعِ القَمَر

وَأَصبَحَ مِثلَ شُعاعِ القَمَر

Then, when you drew away, love spread,

But when you turned cold, passion waned

and became like a ray of moonlight.

And he became like moonlight's ray
