فيin سُكونِthe stillness اللَيلِthe night وَالفَجرُand dawn غَريقsubmerged
نَبَّهَroused الوَسنانَthe drowsy one صَيّاحُthe crier السَحَرthe predawn hour
In the stillness of night, while dawn lay submerged,
In the stillness of night and the dawning light
The predawn crier roused the drowsy one.
The rooster awoke the sleepy from their plight
ماwhat لِهَذاwith this الشَرقِthe east يَبدوappears فيin حَريقa blaze
أَذعَرَfrightened الأَنجُمَthe stars مِنهُaway from it وَالقَمَرand the moon
Why does this east seem engulfed in a blaze
Why does the east burn so fierce and bright
That frightened the stars and the moon away?
That the stars and moon fled in hasty flight
أَيُّهاO النَعسانُsleepy one فيin دُنياthe world السَناradiance
تَتَمَطّىyou stretch فيin سَريرِthe bed الشَفَقِthe twilight glow
O sleepy one in the world of radiance,
O sleepy one in life's temporary bed
You stretch in the bed of twilight.
Tossing in the glow of dusk's rosy red
النَدىthe dew حَولُكَaround you يَهميfalls مَوهَناlate at night
وَالأَزاهيرُand the flowers حَيارىbewildered الحَدَقِthe pupils
The dew falls around you late at night,
The dew falls gently around your head
And the flowers have bewildered eyes.
While flowers blink confused and misled

Lift the bed-curtain, and you will see a marvel:
Lift up your hood and behold the sights
A world swimming in a sea of light,
A world swimming in an ocean of light

فيin مَقاصيرِchambers عُطورٍfragrances وَغِناءand song
And springs gushing gold,
And eyes pouring forth molten gold so bright
In chambers of fragrance and song.
In vaults of scent and song this night

كَالمُصَلّيlike a worshipper تَحتَbeneath مِحرابِthe prayer niche القَمَرthe moon
The curlew called on the distant horizon,
Caravans call from distant skies
Like a worshipper beneath the moon's prayer niche:
Like worshippers under the moon's minaret

هامَwas enraptured وَجداًwith love بِالَّذيfor the one who صاغَfashioned السَحَرthe predawn hour
An ascetic in the night, praying again and again,
Pious in the night, calling out and cries
Enraptured with love for the one who fashioned the hour before dawn.
Enraptured by the one whose artistry was set
وَغُصونُand the branches الجَزورَينِthe casuarina trees اِرتَعَشَتtrembled

فيin الدُجىthe darkness مِثلَlike قِلاعٍsails خافِقَهfluttering
And the casuarina boughs trembled
The branches of jasmine trembled in the gloom
In the darkness, like fluttering sails,
Like shuddering castles, quaking, shaken

Standing as remnants of ships
Standing like remnants of sunken ships
That remained submerged in seas of enchantment.
In magical seas, submerged, forsaken
