وَأَبدَلَand changed النَغماthe melody
وَأَبدَلَ النَغما
إِلىinto شُحوبِpallor of المَشيبgray hair
إِلى شُحوبِ المَشيب
And changed the melody
Into the pallor of gray hair,
فَصَوَّرَand so portrayed العَدماnothingness
فَصَوَّرَ العَدما
فيin مَنظَرٍa scene كَثيبa sand dune
في مَنظَرٍ كَثيب
And so portrayed nothingness
In a dune scene:
جَوٌّan atmosphere مِنَof البَردِthe cold
جَوٌّ مِنَ البَردِ
إِعصارُهُits whirlwind ثَلجُsnow
إِعصارُهُ ثَلجُ
An atmosphere of cold,
Its whirlwind is snow.
يُذيبُmelts فيin الجِلدِthe skin
يُذيبُ في الجِلدِ
روحاًa soul بِهِin it الثَلجُthe snow
روحاً بِهِ الثَلجُ
It melts within the skin
A soul within it—the snow.
وَدَغلٌand a thicket مُصوَحwithered
وَدَغلٌ مُصوَح
يَشُقُّهُcleaves it الذُبولwithering
يَشُقُّهُ الذُبول
And a withered thicket
That withering cleaves;
لاno طائِرٌa bird فَيَصدَحand so it sings out
لا طائِرٌ فَيَصدَح
بِهِin it وَلاand no خَميلa leafy grove
بِهِ وَلا خَميل
No bird to sing out
In it, nor any leafy grove.
