Ah, my Lord! What do I see before me?

What light, in what veils of darkness!

It is the resting place of melodies after dispersal,

and the abode of spirits after wandering.

You watch death and life walking

along time, while it is like a restless sea,

in a distant seclusion from the worlds,

where stillness rises to the height of space.

And the birds of fate croak in

death, with a croaking that deepens annihilation's dread.

    Yet stillness gnaws at it

ravenously, and the barefoot one walks upon the din.

Everlasting in being, it rules over

death, and endures through endurance's own endurance.

And if you listen, a silence appalls you

amid the wailing of eternities past and future.

It answers annihilation, distant though it is,

and finds in it the stillness of lifeless matter.

A disturbing dream, seen there by

the earth—and this annihilation is like sleep.

She took fright at it, and it was made real by

nothingness, out of fear amid ravaging deaths.

Nothing revives hopes within it except

the whitening of snow upon the rocks.

Like the downpour of recurring rains, it joins

the rest and pours down in a dreadful tumult.

It pounds the rock and the caves, and

swoops upon them as eagles swoop.

Alas for me! All that I see is death,

warning the earth of an appointment with ruin.

Time and death rest within it,

    after long wandering and roaming.

And it is as though time had been seized by

fear, and so lay with death in an embrace.

And slowly, slowly it vanished within it,

then sank upon it like someone drowsy.

    Then behold, annihilation rules alone,

lawlessly, over the majesty of the place.

it up, and races over it like a she-ghoul.

The winds tore themselves apart over it,

    roaring from above it, wailing.

A clamor resembling life in what it

    contains, yet empty of sounds.

You see the great trees rising into space,

    appearing above it like specters,

in a dark garb of deep darkness,

enfolded by gloom with low-sweeping wings.

And you see lightning flash and dart

through the folds of darkness like wounds,

or like a renewed war against darkness

that arose between bodies and souls.

And you see waves above it mounting

waves, and rising to assault its shores.

    Darkness, with darkness above it,

defying the eye's discernment across its expanse.

    Dark, rain-laden clouds surge

in tumult through a dreadful night.

My Lord, where is escape from them, while this

specter of death has stretched out its neck?

Here are these ships, moving hurriedly,

hastening as they sail along the current.

They dissolve into one another, then live again,

to reenact the drama through lifetimes.

Each would resemble the others throughout life,

were they free of differing desires.

Alas for this annihilation! Alas for love of it!

Alas for this fate and these destinies!

O time, how many a life you have overthrown,

    lush, with far-spreading shade!

Where we dwelt, and where there was fulfilled

every need born of the hopes that came our way.

Each day grew in beauty and gentleness,

then the mornings passed in the same pattern.

    No cloud troubled its sky,

and it passed in ease, in the finest state.

And a moan and a wail come to you

from the darkness of caves and caverns.

Is it the lament of dreams struck down by

death, and a lament for what wishes endure?

Or is it the soul crying for help and weeping

because of an enemy in death, full of hatred?

Or is it death singing in the darkness,

or an eerie din resounding from the jinn?

Ah, my poet, you have lingered long enough

here, for annihilation is rich in shores.

This is not the shore of al-A'raf, but

a corner of the shore of al-A'raf.

You will see the hiding place of nights, and find

    time's death-place in its all-enveloping darkness,

where no landmark there offers guidance,

no, nor is any wanderer heeded above it.

Then her ship sailed by night, cleaving the dark,

at a brisk trot, its course a gallop.

It plows through the waves and billows with a

    grim prow, plunging through death.

Then it anchored, seized by a trembling,

upon a bare shore of fears.

    لَيسَ حِسٌّ عَلَيهِ غَيرَ اِنقِباضِ

    No vision upon it but darkness;

no sensation upon it but constriction.
