And I do grow wealthy, yet wealth does not make me arrogant.

And I offer what I can spare to whoever seeks my honor.

At times I fall into hardship, and my hardship grows severe.

Then I regain prosperity with my honor still intact.

And until the hardship lifted and gave way to light, no help reached me

from a trusted friend during it, either by loan or gift.

Rather, it was God's bounty and my trade,

and my binding the riding-camel's chest with girths,

to preserve my dignity, rather than be seen abased

before a benefactor who gives a pittance only after hard pressing.

I have carried this out in keeping with ʿAbdal's counsel,

and I carry out the like of what my father enjoined.

I keep harm from my family and drive it away,

yet I repay whoever deals me good or ill in kind.

And I freely give my kindness, and my nature stays clear,

when every true-born young man's character grows clouded.

And I judge against myself when a rightful claim confronts me,

while among people are those judged against who will not judge themselves.

And I press my purposes forward with resolve toward their goal,

when some purposes can scarcely move forward.

And I rescue my ally from trouble after

he slips, as a camel slips from treacherous footing.

And I give him my wealth, my affection, and my support,

even if his ribs are bent around hatred of me.

And my bounty floods him; yet, had I wished, he would have felt

head-striking blows of stinging words that whittle bone.

And I am not two-faced toward anyone I have known,

nor is stinginess—know this—of my sky or my earth.
