My bewilderment is at the light revealing Your holy face.

In You lies my perplexity, though nothing in You is concealed.

You are the farthest thing from every vision.

You hid so deeply that it nearly brought about my apostasy.

Thus You occasioned between intellect and sense, when

You hid, a disagreement no reconciliation removes.

Whenever intellect affirms Your existence, disputing

What sense denies, it tells sense: affirm!

Here, then, disagreement originates, and diffi-

-cult is accord, through differing innate demands.

If I say I have not seen You in every form

I behold, my inward sight declares that impossible.

My statement, and my eye does not bear witness.

    You manifested from me, within me, until You appeared to me;

You hid with a concealment too subtle for every thought.

Yet no mountain remained to me that saw

Your manifestation to me without being crushed by a thunderbolt.

You spoke intimately to me within my secret, and I became

One whose inward self was folded away from all but You.

No space remains in me beyond You wherein

Anything else occurs to me; my time in You is unbounded.

Its return is only through perfecting it with

What befits it: acquiring every virtue.

The pen upon the Tablet once inscribed misery?

A young man thinks his worldly pleasures a blessing,

Though in truth they are nothing but a calamity.

Is its enemy, seeking every disaster for it.

By my life, I have warned with a compassionate warning,

And exceeded, in explanation, the bounds of counsel.

Your hands against the worst deed within you [text unclear].

By the guarded secrets of knowledge within you.

Through it I saw the divine light gleaming

Behind the subtle veils of things.

You made me acknowledge concerning myself that I am

A secret scroll whose folding contains my unfolding.

A place where I arose in the world of sense.

What You taught bewildered me, since none comprehends

It except one whom You have singled out with wisdom.

Who is it that You have singled out with wisdom

Without already encompassing him in Your mercy?

More unintelligible still is their unanimous saying:

'You see idol-worshipers as the most ignorant nation.'

Those people's hearts never magnified idols

As they magnify their own perishing bodies.

Each made the body his worshiped object: thus they were alike,

Though in intention they were not alike.

Despite their knowledge, they fell into a delusion

Which, considered closely, exceeds every other error.

My nearness through it is distance, my profit loss,

My honor humiliation, and my benefit harm.

For I undertook it without directing,

In performing it, my face toward my true destination's face.

Thus I professed what my law forbade,

And revived a ruling my practice had put to death.

My heedlessness, in being left amid its prohibitions, became

The utmost of my chastening and excess of my punishment.

My intellect scattered in You after gathering,

As my affliction gathered after scattering.

My love for You has no limit to its extension

Within me, nor any escape from its ordeal.

By renewing my patience, wear my affliction away.

The mystery of return and beginning has wasted my body.

My ecstatic utterance is slight beside Your intoxication within me.

You are the One who approved my little fault in You.

    فلو وجدت وجدي الجبال لغنت

    Do not reproach me if I sing of You in rapture;

Had mountains felt my ecstasy, they would have sung.

I arose, though long ago they refused my burden.

Their drunkenness could not be measured against mine.

That move me in every secrecy and openness.

Nor any waking comes over me with heedlessness.

Whoever complains one day of his love: for me,

Gratitude in love is more fitting than complaint.

    فلما منعت الصبر أبديت صفحتي

    I concealed my love for You with all my strength and capacity;

When You withheld patience, I showed my face.

I disclosed what I had kept secret concerning You; yet

Neither word nor deed exposed me: only You.

My longing has no part in my exposure,

Nor the tears I shed for You.

    بهتكك ستر الصبر أظهرت عورتي

    Patience once gave me a covering over love;

By tearing patience's covering, You exposed my nakedness.

No [path—text unclear] in love resembles my path,

Nor any creed in it can be measured against mine.

My tongue [text unclear] concerning my qualities; only

The statement that I am a unified essence expresses me.

Every bliss short of union with me is misery,

And every pleasure is painful beside my delight.

Every path whose course does not lead

To me has led to utter disappointment.

Tenderness, I would not have addressed you with a word.

If your sandal slipped and you fell, I would

Say: go where it has cast you!

But what saves you saves my identity,

Just as what harms you is my very injury.

My course could not rightly be ascribed to me.

Alas for a soul that preferred passing sweetness

To abiding sweetness bounded by no duration!

Upon an isthmus between fire and a garden:

Either toward the pains of a hidden soul,

Or toward the delights of a precious soul.

What grief in the soul is a greater choking sorrow

    Likewise, nothing gives greater pleasure

To an exile than reunion after separation.

She were veiled by me, people delighted in my beloved.
