And a gazelle made the Sufi lodge his lair,

and deliberately countered my desire for him with asceticism.

أطال مواعيدي فقلت له أما

تعبدت في دين الهوا بسوى الوعد

تعبدت في دين الهوا بسوى الوعد

He drew out his promises to me, so I said to him, 'Have you not

worshipped in love's religion with something other than a promise?'

فقال اقتصر مني على الوعد في الهوى

فقال اقتصر مني على الوعد في الهوى

فقد صح إيماني على قولي الفرد

فقد صح إيماني على قولي الفرد

So he said, 'In love, be content with a promise from me,

for my faith is sound on the strength of my word alone.'
