meeting the beloved bewilders a lover!

By the knowledge dictated to you from God,

    without any scribe to write it;

and the east wind's month-long march to aid you,

    as though it were a gentle breeze beside you;

and Ali, when you spat into his eyes,

    both together afflicted with inflammation;

he came to see with an eagle's eyes

    in a campaign whose banner was al-Uqab;

    two martyrs, whose afflictions al-Taff

    and Karbala never let me forget;

How can a lover's heart rust through sin

when your beautiful remembrance polishes it?

    ليسَ يَخفَى عليك في القلبِ داءُ

    This is my illness, and you my physician;

no disease within the heart escapes you.

Success includes confiding to you a complaint—

a complaint addressed to you, also a petition.

I filled it with praises, delightful

    in praising you and listening.

Rarely did it attempt your praise without

mim, dal, and ha assisting it.

I rightly compete in you with men

whose buckets yielded to my bucket.

I possess jealousy; poets have crowded me

in the meanings of your praise.

My heart exceeds bounds in loving you; how could

my tongue exceed bounds in praising you?

Reward a mind that delights in praising you,

    knowing that it is radiance.

Through poetry's craft it wove robes

for you, whose embroidery Sana'a could not imitate.

Its arrangement defeated pearls, making equal

    the skilled and clumsy hands.

Accept it, most eloquent speaker of dad,

which made za rise in envy.

Can mentioning miracles fulfill your praise?

How far fulfillment lies from me and them!

Or am I disputing through them with a prophet's people?

Evil is what fools supposed of me.

Yours is the community which prophets envied

because of you, when you came to it.

After you we feared no error, with among us

    scholars inheriting your guidance's light.

The prophets' signs ended, while your signs

    among people have no ending.

    The saints' marvels are miracles

    they obtained from your bounty.

Among your miracles is inability to describe you,

    since enumeration cannot encompass it.

How can speech encompass your qualities?

    Can water-jars drain the seas?

I seek no endpoint to describing you,

though speech has a limit and ending.

Your excellence is time itself, and your signs,

in what we count, its moments.

I have not prolonged my enumeration of your praise

with exhaustive accounting as my aim.

Rather, I thirst with longing, and cannot

be quenched by drinking only a little.

Peace upon you, coming continually from God,

    through which your glory endures.

Peace upon you from yourself; none but

you offers peace worthy of you.

    Peace from everything God created,

that multitudes may live through remembering you.

Blessing like musk, borne from me

to you by a north wind or a crosswind.

    Peace upon your tomb, moistening

    its soft sandy soil.

And praise I offered before my intimate plea,

    since I possessed no wealth.

As long as God's worshippers establish prayer,

and things subsist through their Lord.
